Stipple allows you to tell a story within a photograph by embedding other items like video, text, or other photos within the original image. When brushed over, these other items pop out of the original image. I envision using Stipple as a method of self critique with students, or for a research project based on a specific artist or time period. Stipple has many possibilities!
Now you can! Check out this excellent NY Times slide show which features an assortment of original Hopper paintings and a photograph of what the houses look like today.
Last week I participated in an excellent workshop Hosted by Melissa Pickering, the creator of iCreate To Educate. We used assorted mixed media and craft items to create a stop motion digital video that solves a problem or tells a story. Our group created a color mixing video about a fish, starfish and crab that swim through primary color seaweed and change color. All our characters and scenery were hand made from assorted media; pipe cleaners, foam, paper, and buttons! We used a small document camera to snap images, added sound and used drawing tools within the program to construct our digital story. Such fun for students and us! iCreate To Educate is a remarkable hands on software tool that is powered by Sam Animation. It uses craft, models, visualizations, and stop motion animation to problem solve, construct and create. There is a free version and a paid version which I highly recommend. Awesome!
