On Friday, my colleagues and I took a mix of Advanced Art/AP studio art, and advanced Spanish/ AP Spanish students to NY City to visit two museums. We were lucky that we received a grant to fund our trip from Rhode Island to NY City and we thoroughly enjoyed it!
We saw fabulous works of art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art….as we knew we would! Especially….. Anthony Caro on the rooftop gallery!
But in true amazement, we were just totally mesmerized by our experience at the Hispanic Society of America. The experience was exceptional. We practically had the museum to ourselves, the docent was exceedingly knowledgeable, and all 35 of our students were thoroughly engaged! WOW!
The Hispanic Society of America is a hidden gem on the upper west side of NY City. The Museum is filled with incredible significant art. El Greco, Goya, and Sorolla are featured as well as an extensive collection of ceramics, and sculpture.
It’s worth the trip and it’s free! Really!
One of the Artist’s whose work is featured at the Hispanic Society of America is Joaquin Sorolla. I’m personally highly inspired by his work and have used examples of his painting to inspire my students within their own work.
Within the Hispanic Society of America there is one room filled with a series of Giant Murals called “A Vision of Spain” These murals are painted by Sorolla. They were commissioned in 1911 and completed in 1919 by Sorolla. Truly they are monumental! It was incredible for my students to see them in person.
